Sauna for Couples: Designing a Two-Person Sauna
An intimate sauna for two is an excellent, affordable first build.
Ideal Size
4x6 Feet: The sweet spot. Accommodates two comfortably on facing or side-by-side benches. 24 sq ft interior.
4x4 Feet: Tighter but workable. Two sitting closely on one bench. 16 sq ft. Adequate for most couples.
Height: 6.5–7 feet interior. Lower ceilings heat faster, reducing energy costs.
Bench Layout Options
Single Wide Bench: Two sit side-by-side. Simple, intimate, space-efficient.
Two-Level Benches: Upper bench (18") for sitting, lower (12") for foot rest. More comfortable.
Facing Benches: (4x6 only) Benches on opposite walls. Intimate setting, requires more space.
Heater Selection
Electric 3-5 kW: Ideal for small saunas. 3 kW heats 4x4 in 30 min; 5 kW heats 4x6 in 25–30 min. Safe, clean, easy.
Wood Stove (Optional): For aesthetic and experience. Requires chimney and more maintenance.
